The universe is the same as it's been for eons, but with each generation comes a definite sensibility, a new sight - a unique spirit or mood - that results from a smash-up of technology, culture, and society. This zeitgeist presents and unveils itself in the minds of artists. They dream of it almost every single night. I am seeing in my dreams what my father could not see, nor Basquiat, nor Picasso. They didn't have the supercollider or Jonathan Safran Foer. Or Transformers 3.

The universe waits deep beneath the ground. We are the drills, each generation refining the bit, trying new ground. Abandoning old wells. Of course we should follow each other, plotting near where others have plotted.

And then, when we find ourselves brave or stupid enough, we should head individually for the sea or some godforsaken spit of land, planting horse heads and walking beams. Penetrating the earth.

This is the lead singer of my favorite band (Life Without Buildings - which died after one album back at the turn of the century). Her name is Sue Tomkins. Here's a performance she did at the Tate Britain.

"Sue Tompkins uses the spoken and written word delivered in a deceptively simple and direct fashion. The written word comes first: she accumulates copious notes over a period of time then edits and refines them to create disjointed yet succinct texts that combine repeated words with constructed phrases to evoke imagery, emotion and ideas. These eclectic fragments are presented in the gallery as text on newsprint paper or as spoken word performances. Their rhythm and style are indebted to her experience of being in a band, but are also notable for the starkness of their hypnotising delivery. Performances such as Country Grammar 2003, More Cola Wars 2004 and Elephants Galore 2005 are read from up to 300 pages worth of notes: while some pages might contain one word others might have many.

Made up of text that is original, altered or borrowed, the strength of Tompkins’ work is in its disruption of verbal communication. Louis and the Hunt / They Saw Those Lights

Happy to finally be able to post this. I shot the footage of Lea in Cairo a year ago, and first started talking with Ryne about the concept even earlier. In order to power the projector, we had to run a set of jumper cables from the car battery, through the driver's window while we were moving. We shot around midnight in Ukie Village and a bit downtown in Chicago, and luckily, we didn't get pulled over by the police or electrocuted.

I love making visual work to match with Ryne's music...one day I'll do it justice. Can't wait for the next.
